I got conned into being on the Stewardship committee at church. I decided it would be easier than being a deacon. So they made me give a sermon and write articles for the church newsletter. That was probably good. It made me think about the topic. Previously, I'd just tossed a few bucks into the plate out of habit. Now I understand better why it is important to support the church. At least I think I do. My sermon and the various articles are linked below.
- Rather than do the rational thing and think about the subject of stewardship, first, one of my first actions on the stewardship committee was to give a Stewardship sermon. I was supposed to say something on the theme of "inspiring generosity", since that is the name we gave our campaign that year. For some reason I was conned into giving this sermon as opposed to having one of our pastors do it. That was probably a good idea. Then people could be mad at me for talking about money in church rather than be mad at the pastors. I am a member of the First Congregational Church of Reading, U.C.C..

- A Stewardship Moment -- The plan is to have a bunch of folks stand up to tell why Stewardship is important to them. I believe it is to become a monthly event until the level of our pledging catches up with the level of our spending. I had already spoken in March, 2005, but spoke mostly from notes and seem not to have gotten around to writing them up. I wrote this one out when they asked me to speak again in June, 2005.
